Volunteers of Vacaville

the Blind Project @ CMF

Donated Services

Tape Player Refurbishing

In October 2002, the VOV entered into a cooperative effort with the California Braille & Talking Book Library to provide tape player cleaning services.

The California Talking Book Library is a state operated organization that assists the visually and physically impaired community by providing them with cassette tape players and books on tape. The VOV receives an average of 75 tape players a month, which are thoroughly cleaned and labeled. After this process, the tape players are returned to the California Talking Book Library, where they are refurbished and distributed, at no charge, to those in need of their service.

Our services provide the California Talking Book Library with a cost effective means to refurbish thousands of tape players annually. Since the inception of this program, the VOV have cleaned approximately 5,800 tape players, Free of Charge! The cost savings to the California Talking Book Library is estimated at more than $77,000. This service is very important, especially in this time of financial crisis.

This cooperative effort has bridged the gap between the visually and physically impaired community and all of society. Many lives have been touched and much knowledge shared.

We at the VOV look forward to our continued relationship with the California Talking Book Library.

Eyeglass Recycling

In 2003, the Volunteers of Vacaville (VOV) entered into a cooperative effort with the Lions In Sight Foundation to assist them with their eyeglass donation and recycling program.

The VOV receives approximately 5,000 pairs of glasses each month. The Eye Glass Technician, within the VOV’s Optical Gauging Department, processes and cleans the donated glasses. He utilizes an Auto Lens Meter to gauge each pair of glasses. The glasses that meet specific criteria are labeled, bagged, and sorted. After each shipment is completed, the Lions In Sight pick up all of the glasses and thousands of lives are changed in a very positive way!

The Gift of Sight
Lives are diminished as vision is diminished. Children with poor vision struggle in school, limiting their opportunities to lead a normal, productive life. Adults lose productivity as their near vision predictably declines with age. Seniors lose their independence and dignity as they become increasingly reliant upon others for the simplest tasks. Basic eye care and eyeglasses contribute not only to the improvement of the quality of life for all ages, but also to the process of National Development. Lions In Sight are dedicated to bringing basic eye care and eyeglasses to the world of people in need. As the principle guaging center, the Volunteers of Vacaville are proud to be a part of such a noble and worthwhile endeavor.
